How to Overcome Job Search Defeat

How to Overcome Job Search DefeatHow to Overcome Job Search Defeat1These negative experiences are frustrating and can greatly impact ones job search attitude, motivation, and confidence going forward. But by creating a plan to overcome any potential setbacks, job seekers can reduce stress, remain confident, and in time, accomplish their goals. It starts with a positive attitude, says Paul Carver, a Gallup Strengths Finder Coach and President of Pluvian Consulting LLC, where he coaches business professionals and individuals to understand their talents, grow their strengths, and reach their goals and dreams.Envision success to create success, says Carver. Yes, there will be setbacks. You wont get an offer for every interview. How you choose to respond defines your future success. Writing off a failumineszenzdiode interview as that job wasnt really right for me anyway, helps you maintain confidence for the next interview.Carver continued When you have a positive attitude, you know there is a job out there waiting for you to find it.Here are some scenarios all job seekers encounter- and how to develop a plan to overcome defeatYou applied for a job but didnt hear back.Did you take the time to tailor your resume to the specific job, or did you just send in a one-size-fits-all general resume, hoping to hear back? The more closely you align your resume with the requirements outlined in the job description/job posting, the more closely your resume will match what an applicant tracking system is looking for. A slight change in how you write your resume or apply for jobs can make a major impact. You interviewed but didnt hear back.Interviewing is hard. But dont be hard on yourself after what you may deem a poor interview. After an interview, frustrated job seekers may say not the case. Its more likely you didnt get the job because another candidate made a better impression on that particular day, says Carver. Tomorrow is a new day. Arise again and choose to be positive, succ ess is near. And between now and the next interview, conduct a mock interview with a friend, family member or colleague. Practice answering tough questions and do so wearing that business suit just like you would in an interview. To succeed in an interview, prepare for the interview, well in advance.Learn how to talk about your strengths to employers. You were passed over for a promotion. Its tough when a colleague gets hired over you. But look at this as opportunity. What skills or experiences do you need to add to become more attractive the next time a promotion opens up? What training, education, or on-the-job experience did your co-worker have that may have led to them getting hired over you? Now that this person has moved on, ask to assume more duties and responsibilities and work harder than ever before. Ask your manager for a review and how you can fill in skills or experience gaps and understand areas where you can improve. And if needed, take a class or complete related train ing.In addition, Carver provides the below tips and thoughts on how to overcome job search defeat. Here are four tips for overcoming job search defeat1. Create a vision board.Establish your goals. Include the markers of success you set for yourself. Maybe theres a certain salary or title or work schedule you want. Write it down. Maybe the greater purpose of the work is most important to you. Write it down. Whatever your goals are, they need to be actively considered and sought to give them the greatest chance to be achieved. With a vision board, youll look at your vision of the next job before you go to sleep and as soon as you wake up. Your mind will be conditioned to focus on accomplishing your goals. You are motivating yourself, says Carver. As you confront failure, your vision will remind you why you are doing what youre doing. The success you seek makes the failure tolerable.2. Prepare and practice.Interviews are not the same as a conversation with someone in line at Starbucks. You need your own agenda. What three points are you going to make about yourself? What connections do you have to the industry, company, or interviewer that can help you stand out? How will you answer questions about gaps in your resume? Research, research, research before you interview. And practice your presentation and body language with a colleague, in front of a mirror, and by video and tape recording the mock interview. Watch it and improve. Then walk into that interview confident and with a smile because you know you did everything you can to stand out.3. Analyze failures and learn something that you can apply the next time. If youve had failures in the above areas, the next interview is a chance to review the failure so you can perform better the next time. Confronting failure presents the greatest chance to prevail, says Carver4. It happens to everyone, itll happen to you again, its not personal.I dont know anyone who has gotten every job she ever sought. That puts you in e xceptionally good company, so stop feeling sorry for yourself and get off the couch, says Carver. Learn from the past. Turn the negatives into a positive. And soon you will go from managing a job search to negotiating a job offer.Find a flexible job today. Start your search here.Readers, how do you overcome job search defeat? Coloring Complex 3D Printed Objects

Coloring Complex 3D Printed Objects Coloring Complex 3D Printed Objects A new technique for coloring complex 3D printed objects developed by researchers at Columbia University and a Chinese university could make possible more realistic prototypes as well as more end products made by additive manufacturing.Until now, it has been difficult to produce complicated color patterns and a variety of colors for 3D manufactured items at low cost because of limitations of hydrographic printing, or water transfer printing. The process is widely used in industry manufacturing processes for quickly coloring and applying repeatable color patterns to surfaces of objects such as iPhone cases. As a design engineer, the challenge related to 3D printing is you are often making models and prototypes one object and you want the ability to customize color, says Changxi Zheng, assistant professor of computer science at Columbia and lead researcher on the project.Although hydrographic printing can produce high-quality coloring and can be used on a wide range of materials, it cannot precisely align patterns on complex surfaces and color choices are limited. Zheng explains, If you have a piggy bank and want to color some black dots, for eyes and nose, its very hard to do. The dots for the eyes and nose could end up in a completely different spot than desired. There are many times when a nutzer would like to color the surface of an object with particular color patterns, to decorate a 3D-printed mug with specific, personalized images or just to color a toy, he says.It just doesnt work because hydrographic printing involves using a film featuring the desired design that is softened with chemicals in water. The film is then wrapped around the object and clings to its surface. But since it gets stretched in the immersion process, alignment on the object is not precise. You have no control over the film, and it gets distorted, Zheng says.A cat figurine being hydrographically colored using the multi-immersion computational method. Image Changxi ZhengAdditionally, colors are limited except with high-end printers, and even that is very expensive. With Zhengs new method, any colors are possible as are intricate patterns, inexpensive enough to be done with 3D printers many individuals are now purchasing for themselves. This ordnungsprinzip is easy to set up for personal use and its quite inexpensive, less than 40 cents per printing, Zheng said.Since announcing the work, Zheng says he has heard from companies interested in coloring everything from a motorcycle helmet to car accessories to Halloween masks. The system includes building a physical hydrographic system with off-the-shelf hardware, integrating virtual simulation, calibrating the object calibration, and controlled immersion. He and his team developed a new computational method that simulates the stretching that occurs during immersion and predicts the distortion. Once the distortion and the desired pattern have been s imulated, a colored film transfer is generated that takes into consideration the distortion and aligns exactly with the surface textures of the object.Their work has also included developing a 3D vision system that measures the objects orientation and dipping location. For very complex objects and designs, multiple immersions using different orientations of the object are possible and may be required. The entire system is built upon off-the-shelf hardware and can be easily set up by ordinary users, the researchers wrote in their paper. The object is held by a mechanical gripper connected at one end of a vertical aluminum rod, driven by a linear DC motor. Underneath the rod is a container of water. The location and orientation of the object is measured. The teams computational model predicts the stretch and distortion of the color film and creates a map between the locations on the film and the surface locations to which they are to be transferred. With that map, a color image can be printed on the film that takes into account the film distortion.Zheng became interested when he saw a demonstration of hydrographic printing showing very complicated patterns on YouTube. He soon learned that in China, kits for hydrographic printing are available for sale to DIYers, and thought, How can we improve this?, he says. That led to a collaboration with researchers at Zhejiang University, one of Chinas oldest and most prestigious institutions, in Hangzhou.Zheng is very interested in the interaction between the virtual world and the real world. This research is a good example of how virtual-world computation can work hand-in-hand with a real-world manufacturing process and significantly improve the production quality, he says.Nancy Giges is an independent writer.Learn more about 3D printing challenges and trends at AM3D Conference Expo. Communicate Openly Give credit where credit is due, and dont be afraid to give feedback. Also, talk about how long things will take, best practices, and other efficiency measurements. Keep it Familiar Try hard to include remote teams in office culture, whether its a Slack group sharing GIFs or connecting through social networks. No one wants to or should feel like an outsider. Learn Together Making mistakes is the greatest thing for product innovation and development. We learn from those mistakes and build a stronger, more sustainable solution because of it. Welcome experimentation, making mistakes, and learn together as a group. Embrace Technology There are so many tools (Slack, Skype, Gchat) that allow us to communicate remotely. Its affordable and very effective. What are some of your best practices for on-boarding and training remote workers?First, I love to introduce the new hire to the entire team. Its hard for anyone to work at a company if they fee l like an outsider. So, its important to acclimate everyone immediately and make it a comfortable and fun working environment. And from there, the training begins. I think its best for the team to train one another so they learn from each other and know who to contact when they have questions. Rather than training from your boss or a direct report, theres a lot of seitlich learning, training and co-development that helps build community and team unity. The Washington Post is a huge organization which has recently hit some incredible traffic milestones. How does a remote team help scale a large scale business like this? The Washington Post has become the new paper of record. This comes as a result of hard work across the board, from editorial to tech to advertising. On the ad product side, were looking to bring in the best product and development minds to help push our product forward and build the most optimal experiences for our clients??that means not limiting ourselves to people wh o can be in the office in DC, NYC, California, etc. And it involves knowing how to build and create for the industry at large, not just our site and apps. As a major media and technology company, we want to set the stage for engineering and development while identifying how we can offer software as a service. What advice would you give other hiring managers who want to grow their departments by hiring remotely?Embrace it. Technology allows us to communicate in so many different ways and work with brilliant minds across the globe. The idea of having to be in the office for development is no longer mandatory, its a choice. People will be the most effective in the environment they feel most comfortable with. For some, thats being remote. Hiring managers shouldnt limit their talent pool because some employees are more comfortable working a certain way.Do you have advice for writing a job description that attracts good remote workers?Yes, you need to be open to flexible work hours and you should show that in your job description. The best part about remote working is being able to work on your time. I think a lot of hesitancy for some companies to opt into remote is the idea that they have to work the same hours everyone else is working and be here. When actually, people will be exponentially more productive if they work the hours that align best with their lifestyle. Weve been told that 95 is the norm, but that limits the creative mindset of others that may work better at night or early morning. Remote working is open to this, and with this mindset you will see a tremendous growth in productivity and creativity on your teams. Why do you believe in hiring remote workers? Why does it make good business sense for you at a business like the The Washington Post?In a constantly evolving media space, embracing new ideas is mandatory in buchen to stay ahead of the curve. Having employees from all over the world, or those who choose to work remote, enables different perspect ives and ideas that can be the catalyst to take a company to the next level. Companies shouldnt limit themselves. Process and ideas evolve, and to be ahead in this space companies must evolve with them. The Washington Post is in DC and you are based in New York City. How do you divide your time?I travel to DC to collaborate and meet with the team there. I enjoy working across the organization and that means spending time with a lot of different departments. I aim to go to DC weekly but sometimes Ill stay in NYC for two weeks or more. The Washington Post culture is familiar with remote working, and has the right mentality and technology set up to support this way of work. Can you point to a specific project that the PowerToFly hires on your team helped to execute? Either at RM or WP?We recently hired Virginia Ortiz to help build out our WP BrandStudio native campaigns. She is an amazing front end developer, and her talent??along with the rest of our amazing team??will help take our exe cutions to the next level. I also loved working with PowerToFly at RebelMouse??all of the client campaigns that were built were from the core distributed team. And finally what do you like to do in your free time? (If you have any?)I have two rescue dogs that my wife and I enjoy spending a lot of our free time with. We take them everywhere mountains, beach, suburbs, city. They have the life. Im also very into live music. I started my career as a freelance writer for Stay Thirsty, Relix and Jambase.com, and continue to see about one live show a week. Then theres Soulcycle, which recharges the brain. All of these things are important to remain clear and focused. Balance is important.

The X-Files Dana Scully helped more women go into STEM

The X-Files Dana Scully helped more women go into STEMThe X-Files Dana Scully helped more women go into STEMIf you are a woman whose formative years took place between 1993 and 2002 and you now work in the STEM, there is a good perspektive you probably were a fan of The X-Files. The concept of Gillian Andersons Dana Scully as a no-nonsense, strong and kickass medical doctor, forensic pathologist and FBI agent inspiring a generation of young women to pursue careers in science has always been rumored, but there welches never any concrete data to back it up.until now. Thanks to new research from theGeena Davis Institute on Gender in Media of 2,021 online participants (ages 25 and older), The Scully Effect has now been proven to be real. According to the survey, women who watchedThe X-Filesregularly were 50% more likely to work in STEM, over 60% of those work in STEM said Scully served as a role model, and amongst women who are familiar with Scullys character, 63% say Scully increased the ir confidence that they could excel in a male-dominated profession. The authors of the study wrote, It is easy to dismiss entertainment media as simply entertaining, but half a century of social science research reveals that the characters, images, and storylines in media shape ur everyday lives in profound ways.12 They provide subtle and not-so-subtle cues about what we should prioritize in our lives, how we should spend our time, how we should spend our income, who we should love, how we should love, how to overcome hardships, etc. In the case of the Scully Effect, entertainment media influences what career options girls and women can envision for themselves. In Gillian Andersons own words, Scullys character manifested a woman not yet depicted on TV, and as the fan response soon proved, a desperately needed role model for women of all ages, everywhere.Abby Norman summed up the appeal of the character last year for Paste Magazine. For me- and Im sure many other young women who grew up watching it- Dana Scully was one of the first times I truly identified with a fictional character. I needed someone to give me permission to question what Id been told was the truth. I was desperately seeking strong female role models who had depth and definition beyond the normal tropes- none of which interested me, even as a preteen. As a venerable dweeb, I also was greatly in need of someone to tell me that being smart was an asset rather than an affliction, she wrote. This study is encouraging as more men continue to major in STEM fields in college. In 2013, even though women earn the majority of all bachelors degrees, they earned only 18 percent of all degrees in computer sciences, 19 percent in engineering, and 43 percent in mathematics. This gap then feeds into the workforce pipeline with women hold only 24% of jobs in STEM and only 10% of graduate degrees earned by women are in STEM fields, compared to 24% of graduate degrees earned by men.

3 Ways to Manage Stress in Your Job Search

3 Ways to Manage Stress in Your Job Search3 Ways to Manage Stress in Your Job SearchTheres no doubt for anyone in the middle of a job search its a stressful situation. Unless youre one of the few people (and there are some) who enjoy networking, searching for jobs, going on interviews, and the like, a job search is probably something you want to get over as quickly as possible. Of course, thats not always up to you. So to get you through the job search process, no matter how long it might take you, were taking a look at ways to manage stress in your job search. Here are three ways to manage stress in your job search.1. Stop feeling like every rejection is personal. Its a completely natural reaction, but feeling like every rejection you receive from a potential employer is a personal affront against you will take a big toll. Eliminate that stress by reminding yourself that when an employer decides to go with another candidate, its not necessarily because you did anything wrong. Most of the time, its a combination of timing, luck, and the types of people youre up against in the candidate pool. One thing you might try doing is asking the employer (if youve been in contact with them for job interviews already) if there were any particular things (certifications, experience, etc.) that put the other candidate over the top. Let them know you want to work on your qualifications and would welcome any advice they have for you. Turn this stressful event into a learning moment where you can grow and better yourself professionally.2. Make frequent trips to your happy place.Consider rewarding yourself for every application you submit, and throw yourself a *fun* pity party whenever youre rejected. If nothing else, youll get to watch your favorite movie, or cook your favorite meal, or spend some quality time at the dog park with your pooch. Itll take the sting out of not hearing back from employers, and you might actually be able to skip the stress of rejection almost completely by looking forward to what you get to do because you got rejected. Not a bad way to manage stress in your job search3. Visualize everything going right. Most of the time, when we stress, we picture everything going wrong. We worry well be late to a job interview, or that our cover letter had a typo in it, or that theyll find some less-than-professional photos of us online. But all those negative thoughts put your mindset in a very negative place, which employers will absolutely pick up on.Instead, through every part of the job search process, visualize the right thing happening. Visualize yourself sending the perfect application, and picture the recruiter smiling appreciatively as they read it. Before a job interview, visualize the whole interview process from the moment you leave your house through the last handshake. See every step going well, and feel the confidence you gain in that visualization. Positivity breeds positivity, and employers will pick up on your confidence and opt imism. While stress isnt avoidable in a job search, its absolutely manageable. And the more proactively you manage that stress, the better your job search will goReaders, how do you manage stress in YOUR job search? Share your tried-and-true tricks by leaving a comment below
